Unisa exam results being sent via SMS as deadline passes today

Earlier this week we reported on the disastrous May/June 2018 examination period held by the University of South Africa (Unisa) and the numerous delays surrounding them.

A strike at the beginning of the year caused many problems which plagued students in the first semester, resulting in many exams being moved around and the final results taking longer than usual to be released.

The original release date for these results was 20th July, but Unisa pushed this back to today – 25th July 2018.

But the question now is: exactly how will students find their results? A message from the University stated that the online portal (myUnisa) reserved for such things had been temporarily removed to reduce stress on the site.

While that message does state that the final marks will be communicated over email. an SMS we received last night suggests otherwise. It follows below:

Dear Unisa Student. myUnisa exam tool still offline. Unisa will send you an SMS with available results. Further results to be released via SMS on daily basis.

A short while after receiving this message we received a second SMS which listed the results for certain modules, but not all of them. An email with the same results was, to our knowledge, not sent out.

While any updates from Unisa are usually welcome, this did come with a downside. Many students were using an online tool to check on their results which is now no longer operational. This tool worked by inputting a student number instead of logging into the portal.

Visiting it now will return the error message “valid login could not be determined, you are not authorised to view student results”.

We’re not exactly sure why Unisa would cut off yet another lifeline for their students, but we can only guess that it too was putting stress on their servers.

All of this is happening while the 30th July deadline for semester two registration looms ever closer.
