Eskom advises South Africans plan for loadshedding

Earlier today news broke that wage negotiations between Eskom and unions had reached an impasse.

That impasse has led to industrial action which has further resulted in acts of intimidation, sabotage and obstruction of access to controls at several power stations throughout Monday. As a result, Eskom has advised that South Africans might be affected by loadshedding.

The power utility said that while it has activated its emergency procedures, the risk of loadshedding making a return is high.

“Customers are advised to plan on the assumption that loadshedding will take place and are encouraged to check their loadshedding schedules on the Eskom and their municipal website,” Eskom said.

Eskom says that it and trade unions were meant to return to wage negotiations this Friday (3rd August) but it appears that union members are restless. The main sticking point appears to be unions demanding bonuses and Eskom refusing to put that on the table due to its current financial woes.

“Eskom would also like to remind all employees that the organisation has been designated as an essential service provider, and as such employees are prohibited from participating in any form of industrial action that will further hurt the country, its people and the economy,” the utility said.

Loadshedding schedules can be found on your municipality’s website or if you receive your power directly from Eskom you can visit its loadshedding website.
