BlackBerry partners with Indian manufacturer on Evolve smartphones

Ever since TCL acquired the license to manufacture BlackBerry Mobile-branded devices, the company has been throwing everything against the design wall to see if it will stick.

There latest offerings come from an Indian manufacturer, Optiemus, with the venture yielding a pair of new devices – the BlackBerry Evolve and Evolve X.

Unlike previous BlackBerry devices, these two don’t sport a touch and type setup, favouring a longer body display only design.

As such they feature the popular 18:9 screen ratio that we saw several manufacturers debut last year, but there’s no screen notch so the Evolve and Evolve X are a little behind trend in that regard (thankfully – Ed).

Both smartphones are quite similar in terms of specification, with a 5.99″ Full HD+ (2 160 X 1 080) display, 16 MP front-facing camera, rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and 4 000mAh battery.

What separates the Evolve X from its lesser spec’d brethren is an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset, 6GB RAM and dual camera (12MP and 13MP lens) setup on the rear.

The standard Evolve features a Snapdragon 450 CPU, 4GB RAM and dual camera (13MP and 13MP lens) orientation.

The Evolve and Evolve X are set to go on sale in India later this month, costing a recommended ₹24 990 (~R4 900) and ₹34 990 (~R6 862) respectively.

No word on whether these devices will be available outside the subcontinent at this stage, but given the mixed reaction to recent devices like the KEYone, BlackBerry might benefit from launching two mid-range offerings in other regions.
