Qualcomm to debut new smartwatch chip on 10th September

Qualcomm has been rather quiet when it comes to wearables of late, but that is about to change come 10th September.

The chipmaker is reported to have a new offering in the works, with Android Police sharing the details for an event scheduled for next month after IFA 2018 wraps up in Berlin.

Qualcomm’s lineup of wearable-specific chips could do with an update, as the Snapdragon Wear 2100 platform has been around for the past two years.

With Google recently rebranding its wearable operating system as Wear OS, there will likely be an increase in the number of new smartwatches hitting the market over the next year.

As such, Qualcomm will need to showcase a new processor in order to ensure that it’s still the preferred vendor for Wear OS sporting devices.

The company has also noted that it will be getting into the device game, with a new smartwatch of their own set for debut later in the year.

Whether we’ll get a teaser of the device, or even a fully fledged reveal remains to be seen.

With Apple still dominating the market in terms of smartwatches, and Samsung set to unveil a new Galaxy Watch this week, Qualcomm will need to act quickly if it wants a share of the spotlight.
