[Update] New Lenovo ThinkPad P1 is their thinnest & lightest pro notebook

Update

At the time of writing, Lenovo’s pricing and availability for the ThinkPad P1 and P72 were unknown. Now the manufacturer has confirmed that the ThinkPad P1 will go on sale in South Africa in October for a recommended R27 999. There is still no pricing for the larger P72 at this stage.

Original story follows below.

Lenovo has a new professional notebook in its ranks with the ThinkPad P1.

The company’s ThinkPad range is aimed at a more business-focused consumer, and this latest offering is designed to offer a more professional ultrabook-esque option.

So much so that it is the thinnest and lightest professional notebook that Lenovo has manufactured to date.

To that end it tips the scale at 1.70kg and measures 18.4 mm thin, all of which is in a 35 percent smaller body compared to previous iterations.

The ThinkPad P1 features a 15.6inch display, with a 4K sporting model added to the lineup.

Internally, Lenovo has opted for the Nvidia Quadro P series, with the P2000 the top graphics card that users can pick for their P1.

On the processor side of things, an 8th Gen Intel processor present, with clocked speeds said to be around the 4.6GHz mark depending on the CPU chosen.

Added to this is up to 64GB of DDR4 RAM and a healthy 4TB of onboard storage.

Along with the new P1, Lenovo has also debuted the larger P72.

This notebook ups everything compared to the P1, with a massive 17.3inch screen, up to 128GB DDR4 RAM and 16GB Intel Optane specifically partitioned to handle the processing of large data sets.

It also caters to the Nvidia Quadro P range, with the P5200 the top graphics card users can configure.

At this stage there’s no mention of when the P1 and P72 will be coming to South Africa, but the pair of pro notebooks are set to go on sale Stateside later this month.

As far as pricing goes the P1 starts at $1 949 (~R28 210) and P72 begins at $1799 (~R25 986).

We have no conformation of local pricing, but we’re expecting both notebooks to come in at far more than the listed conversion rates, if the ThinkPad Carbon X1‘s price tag (R34k-plus) is anything to go by.

If you’re in the market for a top of the line pro notebook, you’ll need to be saving up quite a bit of cash to get your hands on Lenovo’s new ThinkPad P1 and P72.
