Devolver Digital’s The Messenger lands 30th August for Switch and PC

Devolver Digital is having quite the week, announcing new game Gris and giving us a release date for their retro ninja game The Messenger.

This has been one of those titles that Devolver has seldom promoted so we’re glad to see it again. Aside from aping games of the past this release date trailer has a tonne of great details such as the music becoming muted when the character goes underwater.

We’re also intrigued by the small horned creature which takes your loot. As the dialogue mentions repaying a debt, we wonder if this will be a loan situation a la Tom Nook in Animal Crossing. We hope it’s not similar to the damned Resourceful Rat, who is the bane of Enter the Gungeon players everywhere.

The ability to switch between 8- and 16-bit graphics using a time travelling mechanic looks really interesting and we hope they use it more in the game outside of platforming. It also reminds us of the now famous Effect and Cause mission in Titanfall 2, which does put a smile on our faces.

The developer here is newcomer Canadian operation Sabotage Studio. Given the quality games that come from first-time devs under Devolver, we’ve got zero worries here.

While Steam and Nintendo eShop pages exist for this game, there’s no regional pricing as of yet. The US price is $20 (~R291) so budget that local equivalent if you wish to pick it up. Given that Devolver has been rather kind when it comes to South African prices on the Switch, this may be another title that doesn’t break the bank if you prefer to get it on that console.
