Facebook’s birthday donations feature has raised $3 million

There haven’t been a bunch of glowing stories about Facebook in recent months, but this latest development shows that the social media platform is not all that bad.

Founder Mark Zuckerberg confirmed in a post that an estimated $3 million in funds have been raised for birthday donations.

For those unfamiliar with the feature, it allows users to ask their friends to make donations on their birthday instead of buying gifts, with the money raised going to a non-profit organisation of their choice.

The aforementioned $3 million has reportedly gone to 750 000 non-profit organisations, ever since the feature rolled out on the platform last year.

The range of organisations are quite widespread, from animal shelters and food banks, to Alzheimer’s research and charities.

Facebook explained in June this year that it would be donating $5 for every birthday fundraiser started, provided it’s for one of the 750 000 vetted US organisations listed by the company.

Should one of the organisations not appeal to you, the platform also says that users can start their own pages to raise money for a charity.
