Time to upgrade? Nvidia’s RTX 20 Series GPUs revealed

As today came closer the rumours and leaks surrounding Nvidia’s next generation of GPUs reached fever pitch.

Speculating can be fun but we have PCs we want to upgrade so we wanted hard facts and this afternoon Nvidia obliged.

As we all knew already the next generation of Nvidia GPUs will fall under the GTX 11 banner. Just kidding it’s the RTX 20 banner.

“This is a historic moment for computer graphics”, said Nvidia chief executive officer Jensen Huang and following the presentation we have to agree.

The GPUs are powered by Nvidia’s Turing architect which brings with it Real-Time Ray tracing technology hence the RTX in the naming scheme. While Huang did an excellent job of explaining the tech we feel the best way to explain what RTX is, is to see it for yourself.

It is a rather fascinating technology that combines different technologies including rasterization and ray tracing into one tech. This is further helped along by artificial intelligence and deep learning.

The GPU itself is made up of three processors: Turing SM, RT Core and the Tensor Core. These processors together are able to both predict and an generate pixel perfect erm, pixels.

Huang said during the presentation that the Tensor Core itself is as powerful as 10 GTX 1080 Tis dedicated solely to artifical intelligence

The RTX platform is able to trace 10X the amount of rays the GTX 1080 Ti was capable of. To put that into perspective the latest GPU is even more powerful than Nvidia’s DGX machine which contains 4 Volta cards. Turing is unhinged, irresponsible levels of power.

The net result of all of this power is gorgeous lighting and effects in video games, in real time.

Overall, Nvidia is promising performance gains of up to 6X compared to Volta GPUs. Let that sink in for a moment. This afternoon we were hoping for improvements of 25 – 30 percent, Nvidia is promising gains of 600 percent on top of what Volta is already capable of.

During the presentation we saw Epic Games’ Infiltrator running at 59.9 – 60 fps at a 4K resolution. The GTX 1080 Ti was capable of running the demo at 4K 30fps.

As Huang put it, “beautifully smooth”.

The RTX platform will be available on the GeForce RTX 2080Ti, 2080 and 2070. All three of which will be available as a Founders Edition.

You can find all the details over on the Nvidia website.

Pricing is a rather hard pill to swallow. The RTX 2080 Ti Founders edition will cost $1 199 in the States with the 2080 and 2070 carrying a price tag of $799 and $599 respectively. There’s no word on local pricing just yet but we’ll let you know once that changes.

The RTX 2080 Ti and RTX 2080 will ship “on or around” 20th September

The GTX 10 series of GPUs has been around since 2016 and while buyers might be looking for reason to upgrade Nvidia was going to have to provide a compelling reason to upgrade, and we think the firm has done just that.
