Here’s the new, boring LEGO Cloud City set

LEGO has a line of prestigious sets known as the Ultimate Collectors Series, or UCS. This line is usually tied to Star Wars and now it’s being used for an upcoming set based on Cloud City.

75222: Betrayal at Cloud City contains 2 812 pieces and will retail for $350 / £300 / €350. Localised pricing should pop up later, but we’re estimating around R6 500 – R8 000 depending on the rand’s value when it arrives, and what the markup turns out to be.

Those overseas can pick it up on 1st October with LEGO VIP members getting early access from 13th September. Again, we can only guess for the local arrival but, given that the new official LEGO store has been so great at procuring sets early, we are optimistic.

So what do you get for all that money? This is more of a play set taking after 75098: Assault on Hoth, compared to a display model like 75192: Millennium Falcon or many others.

The main build is split into different sections with each dedicated to a scene from Empire Strikes Back.

As you may have guessed from the headline, we’re not particularly enthused about this set.

It may be our own high expectations, but we hoped for a UCS Cloud City that was a complete model of the exterior structure.

Would it have been very difficult to replicate that in LEGO? Sure, but if anyone could have done it it’s the talented designers at the Danish company. Ah well, guess we’ll have to make our own and include a hell of a lot of transparent elements to keep it up.

Back to the official set and there’s a whopping 18 minifigures inside together with miniaturised versions of the Slave I and the Twin-Pod.

We’re sure staunch collectors and those looking for something to actually play with will find something to like here, but it’s a set that we’re going to pass on.

If you want to see more of the set we suggest checking out the official images hosted over on the unofficial LEGO database Brickset.
