Nikon debuts new Z6 and Z7 mirrorless cameras

In the world of mirrorless cameras, which are slowly gaining ground on their DSLR brethren, it’s Sony that is widely considered to be leading the market. That may soon change though, with Nikon finally debuting its new offerings – the Z6 and Z7.

We say finally as the pair of mirrorless cameras have long been rumoured, with leaked images and specifications landing online in recent weeks.

Now the Nikon Z7 and Z6 have officially been unveiled, and the Japanese camera maker has not held back in putting these two together.

The new Nikon Z7

Starting with the larger and more powerful Z7. This flagship model is sporting a full-frame 45.7 megapixel BSI CMOS sensor. Paired with this is an Exspeed 6 image processor, 493 point autofocus system and an ISO range of 64 to 25 000. The Z7 also boasts 4K UHD video recording capabilities and 9fps continuous shooting.

Other notable aspects to this mirrorless camera include a 3.2″ touchscreen on the rear for scrolling through settings, and previewing images, with it also featuring one million dots. The screen tilts but does not rotate, which may not make it ideal for vloggers, as Engadget points out.

There’s a 3.6 million dot OLED electronic viewfinder added to the mix as well, that Nikon says covers 100 percent of the frame.

While we obviously haven’t had the chance to try out the Z7 yet, it’s clear by the specifications that Nikon want this mirrorless camera to rival Sony’s impressive a7Riii.

Whether or not it does though, remains to be seen.

The smaller Nikon Z6

Moving onto the other new mirrorless camera, the Nikon Z6 isn’t pulling any punches either, and should appeal to photographers who want a smaller camera option but may be unwilling to pay for the pricier Z7.

It has a multifunctional FX-format and a 24.5 megapixel CMOS sensor. Focal-plane autofocus is on offer here too, with an ISO range of 100 to 51 200.

The Z6 is utilising the same Exspeed 6 processor as its big brother, but the autofocus system is lower at 273 points, and covering 90 percent of the frame. It too can record in 4K UHD at 30fps.

A 3.3″ tilting touchscreen is present, as well as an electronic viewfinder that covers 100 percent of the frame as well.

At this stage there’s no official word from Nikon South Africa on when the Z7 and Z6 will be landing locally, or indeed how much they will cost.

That said, we’ve already seen the mirrorless cameras pop up on their website, as well as finding them for pre-order at Outdoorphoto, but cost is TBA.
