The Galaxy J2 Core – Samsung’s first Android Go phone

Samsung has revealed a new smartphone, and no it’s not a flagship. Instead it is the entry-level Galaxy J2 Core, which carries the unique distinction of being the South Korean manufacturer’s first Android Go sporting device.

More specifically it’s the Android Oreo version of Go, which the company says optimises performance to get the most out of the device, compared to other phones featuring the streamlined version of the operating system.

While we cannot gauge whether it can deliver on those claims just yet, we can run through the specifications to see what else is on offer.

To that end a 5.0″ TFT display is up front with a modest 960 X 540 resolution. Added to this is an Exynos 7570 chipset, 1GB RAM and 8GB storage, but no mention of a microSD slot so space will likely be at a premium.

There’s an 8MP shooter on the rear and lower res 5MP option up front with 2 600mAh battery keeping the lights on.

We’ll have to wait and see if Samsung Mobile South Africa have designs to launch the Galaxy J2 Core locally, but it is set for release in India and Malaysia at the moment, costing roughly $100 (~R1 431).

While it’s a relatively bare bones device that won’t rival a mid-range device, the J2 Core could appeal to those making the move from feature phone to smartphone, or perhaps those in need of a cheaper backup device.
