Jozi residents asked to use water sparingly following electrical fire

Johannesburg Water has asked residents to use water sparingly following the explosion of an electrical transformer at the Rand Water Eikenhof Pumping Station.

The transformer that exploded is owned by Johannesburg City Power and forms part of the electricity facility that supplies the pumping station with power.

As a result some reservoirs are running low and water supply to residents on the west of Johannesburg, the West Rand and Rustenburg in the North West may be affected.

While City Power is currently conducting repairs there is no word on when they will be completed.

Johannesburg Water outlined the current reservoir and water tower status throughout the city.

  • Lenasia Cosmo is currently being throttled at 50 percent
  • Hospital Hill reservoir has been closed and the pump shut off
  • Lenasia CBD’s water supply is expected to run out by Tuesday afternoon (28 August) due to demand
  • Soweto’s water system is currently stable
  • The tower in Crown Gardens is empty
  • Both Hursthill tower and reservoir are closed
  • Brixton water tower is empty
  • Crosby tower is empty

In addition there are already water tankers on site at Brixton SAPS, 43 Kilmore Street and St. Elmo in Brixton.

Schools, clinics and hospitals are encouraged to contact Johannesburg Water when an alternative water supply is needed.
