No more exchange rate woes – Netflix is now priced in rands

Great news this morning for Netflix binge-watchers – you can now pay for the service in rands.

Until now Netflix subscribers had been paying their subscription in dollars. That meant that every month your subscription fee would fluctuate according to how the rand was performing against the dollar.

The localised pricing for Netflix can be seen below.

  • Basic – R99 per month
  • Standard – R139 per month
  • Premium – R169 per month

At current exchange rates (R14.18 for $1) this is good news for those on the Basic package. Instead of paying $7.99 (R113.31) you’ll now only be paying R99 per month. The price dips slightly in the Standard package from $9.99 (R141.67) to R139 per month and those on the Premium package will now be paying R0.69 (settle down) cents less than when they were paying in dollars.

Something to note is that if you are currently subscribed to Netflix your package will still reflect in dollars as per the image below. We suspect that this will be updated when we’re billed again but we’ve fired off a question to Netflix to clarify this.

This update in pricing also brings the cost of Netflix’s base package in-line with local offering Showmax which also costs R99 per month for unlimited viewing. It’s worth noting that with Showmax for R99 you can watch two simultaneous streams compared to Netflix’s one.
