Acer Aspire notebooks get an update and local pricing

During its IFA 2018 conference Acer showed off an updated Aspire notebook range that continues to carry the flag of thin and light computing.

We’ve already seen the latest Swift notebooks so let’s take a moment to check out the Aspire range.

The big star of the line-up is the Aspire 7 notebook.

We say big but at 1.6kg and measuring just 16.9mm vertically, this notebook is far from large. In terms of processing power the notebook can house either an Intel Core i7-8750G or i5-8305G processor which is paired with up to 16GB of DDR4 RAM.

The IPS display is 15.6 inches diagonally with resolutions up to 4K being supported depending on the model. Driving that display is a Radeon RX Vega M GL GPU that boasts 4GB of HBM2.

Acer says that this notebook is aimed at content creators and it should handle video and photo editing easily.

Middle of the road

Following on the coattails of the Aspire 7 the Aspire 5 is a toned down experience from the range’s flagship.

Where the 7 is primed for content creation the 5 is more suited for content consumption.

The display is a 15.6 inch affair with a FullHD (1 920 x 1 080) resolution and a tiny 7.8mm bezel surround it.

Driving that display is an Nvidia GeForce MX150 GPU though some models might just make do with the GPU contained in the 8th generation of Intel CPUs.

Speaking of CPUs the Aspire 5 will boast up to an Intel Core i7 CPU.

The last notebook in the Aspire range is the Aspire 3.

While it doesn’t have as much grunt as the 5 or 7, this notebook seems suited for folks that just need something to access the internet on or a school learner that needs to do their homework.

Acer hasn’t specified which generation of CPUs this notebook will contain but support for up to 8GB of DDR4 2666MHz memory leads us to believe we’ll be getting an 8th generation Intel CPU.

Pricing and availability

The Acer Aspire 3, 5 and 7 are all currently available in South Africa and the upgraded notebooks are on the way.

Acer didn’t specify exact pricing but it has told us that upgrades will fetch an extra R3 999 on top of the current price depending on your configuration.

We suspect this means that the very top of the shelf Aspire 7 may cost more than R3 999 extra.

We’d also like to point out that Acer hasn’t crammed an 8th generation Intel Core i9 into any of its thin and light notebooks. This is likely due to the immense temperatures that CPU kicks out and the cooling you need to counter it.

Of course the firm could have taken the Apple route and done it anyway but we feel it’s important to note that Acer is championing user experience over higher performance numbers.

That being said, if performance is important to you check out the all new Predator line-up.
