Acer introduces modular OJO 500 mixed reality headset

Acer one was of the first companies to showcase its wares at IFA 2018 today, and the Taiwanese manufacturer’s focus was strictly on new computing hardware. That said, they did have an intriguing device in the form of the Acer OJO 500.

It’s a new mixed reality headset, but what makes it particularly interesting is its modular design.

To that end some of the parts are detachable, with Acer saying it could be used for hot swapping components should multiple users be wearing the headset.

More specifically Acer mentioned that museums and similar public spaces could make use of such a modular mixed reality headset.

Other aspects to its design include a visor that can be flipped upwards so wearers don’t have to take the OJO 500 off to see what’s actually happening around them.

Acer has also improved the field of view compared to its previous mixed reality offering, with the OJO 500 featuring 100-degrees, a pair of 2.89″ displays (2 880 X 1440) and a sound pipe that funnels in audio to negate the need for headphones.

The Acer OJO 500 will land in US and Europe sometime in November, costing an estimated $399 (~R5 736).

Hopefully we’ll find out if it will be available in South Africa soon.
