Of owls and thrones – Acer shows off new Predator gear at IFA 2018

Acer has shown off new additions to its gaming focused Predator line-up at IFA 2018.

First up we were shown the updated Orion 9000 desktop PCs. These desktops will be among the first to ship with Nvidia’s all new GeForce RTX GPUs as well as an Intel Core i9 CPU boasting up to 18 cores.

The Orion 3000 and 5000 models will also ship with new RTX GPUs.

The standout feature of these desktops are the clear side panels which also prevents electromagnetic interference (EMI) according to Acer.

Among the Orion series Acer also showed off the new Predator X desktop.

Designed for enthusiasts and creators, the Predator X boasts dual Intel Xeon CPUs and 12 ECC compatible DIMM slots. It’s basically a workstation but with a heavy focus on gaming.

Flipping great

Acer also revealed the all new Predator Triton 900 gaming notebook.

The notebook sports features you’d expect such as a 4K display, G-Sync support and a flipping display.

No really, the display can be flipped thanks to a hinge.

Acer says that this allows gamers to adjust the distance of the display easily for a more immersive experience. While it certainly is striking it’s also bizarre.

The Triton 900 also sports two of Acer’s 4th generation Aeroblade 3D fans which will reportedly result in cooling 29 percent more effective than the first generation of fans. The firm says that the wingtips of an owl provided inspiration for this cooling solution.

But can you do this?

By far and away the most bizarre product Acer showed off was the Thronos which is – when you look at it objectively – a chair.

More accurately the Thronos is a cockpit that allows you to attach three 27 inch monitors to it and it’s motorised. There is space to put a Predator PC and the whole affair lights up because of course it does.

We have no idea how much this piece of kit will set you back and Acer isn’t sharing pricing right now.

Do we think the Thronos is silly? Yes. Do we want even though it’s silly? Yes.

No local pricing or availability has been shared by Acer just yet but we’ll be sure to bring you that news as and when it happens.
