Sony makes subtle improvements for new Xperia XZ3 flagship

Sony has revealed a new flagship phone at IFA 2018, as the company has routinely done for the past few years in Berlin. This latest offering is the Xperia XZ3, and looks quite a lot like its predecessor.

In fact, one may not be able to tell the difference between the two devices if they placed face down next to each other.

Flip them over though, and it’s clear to see that the Xperia XZ3 is sporting a new display.

Namely a larger 6″ QHD+ variant that has a 2 880 X 1 440 resolution and caters to HDR. Added to this is a 18:9 screen ratio and bezel-less design for the sides.

It’s not all screen though, so there’s a slight bezel at the top and bottom of the XZ3.

Much of the rest of the phone is similar to that of the XZ2, with an octa-core Snapdragon 845 chipset doing the heavy lifting, 4GB RAM, 64GB onboard storage (plus a microSD slot for an extra 512GB) and a 3 300mAh battery.

There’s a 19MP shooter on the rear, and if it performs as well as it does on the XZ2, then it will prove quite handy indeed.

It’s not all copy and paste from the XZ2 though, with Sony adding a few quirks to the new offering. This takes the guise of a gesture controlled AI feature that brings up a user’s most popular apps.

There’s also a vibration aspect that works while watching videos, along with the device shipping with Android 9.0 Pie, with a Sony skin layered on top.

Unfortunately it’s not supporting 5G, despite Sony talking up the potential that such a broadband standard would allow for real-time solutions during its IFA 2018 presentation.

Given their relationship with Qualcomm we’ll have to wait until MWC 2019 to see if that Xperia flagship is 5G capable.

In the meantime though, looking at the Xperia XZ3 and having not tried it in person yet, we’d have to say that there isn’t a substantial upgrade here compared to the previous model.

As such, you may want to hold off until next year to invest in a new Xperia phone.

That said, we’re sure Sony Mobile South Africa will host a local launch event shortly for the Xperia XZ3 where we can get better acquainted with the new device.

As for when it’s launching, Sony noted that it will arrive in September for Europe, but word on the rest of EMEA.
