DStv Now adds three new apps for lean-back viewing

Multichoice has added a fairly significant feature to its DStv Now offering, with support for three different lean-back services coming in the form of new apps.

These apps will now make it possible for a DStv Now user to essentially turn any TV into a DStv hub without the need for a decoder.

The apps in question are designed for TVs either linked to or natively running Apple TV (4th Gen and higher), Samsung SMART TVs (2015 models and onwards) and Android TV (any Google-certified devices).

Multichoice has also noted that it will be adding support for other smart TVs and brands in future, but did not hint at any in particular, or indeed when the additions would be happening.

“The idea when we launched DStv Now was to give DStv subscribers a way to catch the big game and their favourite shows while away from home. What’s surprised us is how popular it’s also been as a method of getting DStv content on to other TVs around the home. By adding these new apps we’ve made that process a whole lot easier and more convenient – no fussing with cables or casting, and no decoder needed,” says Mark Rayner, MultiChoice SA CEO.

For those still unfamiliar with DStv Now, it’s free to use for any Multichoice subscriber, but access to content on the platform is limited to the DStv package that one has.

It is also an OTT streaming service, so Multichoice does suggest that users with high-speed uncapped internet access will benefit the most from this offering.

That said, adding support for three popular products like this is an important addition for DStv Now, especially for users who may only have one decoder, or those who want to stream when away from the home.
