Qualcomm confirms new 7nm SoC will work on 5G-capable phones

Qualcomm has revealed some details for its next generation of mobile chipset.

While not spilling all the beans, the chipmaker that this System on Chip (SoC) will utilise a 7 nanometer node design, which would be a step up from the current 10nm process featured on the Snapdragon 845.

As such, this chipset will likely be the Snapdragon 855, although Qualcomm are yet to divulge the name of the SoC.

What the company has confirmed is that it will work in conjunction with Qualcomm’s own Snapdragon X50 5G modem, which is designed for devices that can handle the enhanced broadband standard.

Qualcomm also adds that the new SoC is being sent to its OEMs to begin testing it out in their upcoming devices, although a precise date for when they’ll hit market has not been earmarked.

That said we should expect the Snapdragon 855 to feature on some of the first 5G-capable smartphones next year.

While those devices remain unknown, if we’re taking odds, it will likely appear on the flagship smartphones that Samsung, LG and Sony have slated for debut at MWC 2019.

This represents a significant step for the manufacturer, but they will not be the first to market with 7nm chipsets, as Huawei has confirmed that their latest Kirin 980 processor will feature the design, along with featuring in the latest Mate device in October.

As such, the race to match or surpass the capabilities of Huawei’s Kirin CPUs will be on.

The only question now is when Samsung’s Exynos lineup will take the next step to a smaller node design.
