What to expect at IFA 2018

Later this week IFA 2018 is going to kick off in Berlin, with the German capital playing host to Europe’s largest consumer technology conference.

Think of it as the EU’s version of CES, with mobile, PC, TV and several other manufacturers descending on Berlin to showcase their latest wares.

With so much-anticipated for IFA 2018, as is the case every year, here’s what we’re expecting to see debut in the German city in the coming week, and the companies that will be showing them off.

Acer

A regular fixture at IFA these days, Acer will likely be showcasing some of its new computing devices, with the slimmer all-round notebooks and hardcore gaming devices expected to grab the headlines.

The Taiwanese company hasn’t hinted at any new products in particular, but there are always refreshes of the Spin, Swift and Predator lineups on the way.

Acer’s IFA 2018 press conference starts at 10:30 (SAST) on 29th August, and you can watch the live stream here.

Asus

Another mainstay when it comes to IFA and computing products is Asus. Last year the Taiwanese company debuted the world’s thinnest 2-in-1 notebook in the form of the ZenBook Flip 14.

This year another notebook is anticipated to grab take the focus, but rumours suggest it will be something for the Chromebook lineup, which has not seen a refresh for a couple of years.

Asus’ IFA 2018 media day starts on 29th August at 11:00 (SAST). Will we see more ROG phones or tablets?

BlackBerry

Yes BlackBerry’s mobile division is still chugging along under the banner of TCL. At IFA the company has a new device to showcase, with teasers for the Key 2 LE being spotted on their Twitter page.

The latest device is designed to right the wrongs of the Key 2, but whether ir does so remains to be seen.

If you’re interested to see what the Key 2 LE is sporting, BlackBerry Mobile is scheduled to debut the device on 30th August.

Huawei

For Huawei’s press conferences in recent years, IFA has been more focused on silicon than it is has hardware. 2018 will likely be no different, with the company getting ready to showcase its new Kirin 980 processor.

Touting a new 7nm architecture and Mobile AI capabilities, the CPU will be powering the upcoming Mate 20 smartphone, along with next year’s P series flagship.

There could also be a few mid-range devices in the works, with Huawei hosting their live stream event on 31st August at 14:00 (SAST).

Lenovo

Lenovo could potentially have a number of new devices to showcase at IFA 2018 this week, with its VR headsets for Windows, Motorola smartphones and notebook refreshes in the offing.

The are reports that the companies plans for VR will be unpacked further, along with a 15.6″ ThinkPad P1 said to be on the way. The latter is designed to be Lenovo’s answer to the Dell XPS 15 and an alternative to the larger MacBook Pro.

Lenovo’s Tech Life 18 live stream for IFA is set to start at 20:30 (SAST) on 30th August, and you can watch it here.

LG

LG will be pushing on two fronts at IFA 2018 – mobile and TV.

Taking care of the mobile side of things will be the launch of new smartphone in the V series, most likely called the V40. As for TV, a few more ThinQ sporting models are expected to be announced, with LG also anticipated to expand on their smart devices and appliances.

With an entire ecosystem of devices to port over to the ThinQ AI platform, this is probably were LG will be focusing its attention.

You can watch their live stream on 31st August at 10:30 (SAST) here.

Samsung

The other big manufacturer out of South Korea, Samsung also has multiple announcements in store for IFA 2018. They’ve already begun, with a new Thunderbolt QLED Curved Monitor, and we’re expecting more screens both big and small to appear.

On the wearables front, the Galaxy Watch was unveiled last month, so we’re likely going to see more fitness-focused Gear smartwatches arrive later this week.

Samsung is hosting their live stream earlier than most, with it scheduled to start on 30th August.

Sony

As for the Japanese manufacturer, IFA has been their European platform in recent years when it comes to new smartphones and IoT-designed connected devices.

The same is anticipated this time round, with the unofficially named Xperia XZ3 likely, along with a few wearables and audio offerings leveraging Sony’s technology.

You’ll be able to see everything they have in store come 30th August at 13:00 (SAST) when their live stream gets underway here.
