Samsung could debut foldable smartphone later this year

In recent years there have been routine consumer tech stories that crop up every now and then, and this is one such story – the foldable smartphone.

According to reports from CNBC, which recently had a series of in-depth discussions with Samsung Mobile head DJ Koh, the South Korean company may finally be ready to debut a foldable smartphone.

Koh did not explicitly state that the Samsung would unveil a device with a foldable display, but CNBC says he hinted as much.

In particular he said that Samsung may have the device ready to show off at its developer conference in November, but it remains unclear whether it will be hitting the market anytime soon.

If the foldable smartphone does indeed make an appearance at SDC 2018, it might only be so developers have a chance to inspect the form factor and see what kinds of applications and services they can create for the unique device.

It’s been some time since Samsung first teased plans to develop a foldable display-touting smartphone, with the first concepts for the device spotted back in 2012.

With the other big South Korean smartphone maker, LG, pushing its efforts in the bendable OLED display field, it looks like Samsung may beat them to the punch in bringing a device to consumers.

A word of caution though, as this isn’t the first time that rumours and reports of an unveiling for a foldable smartphone have appeared.

As such intrigued consumers will need to temper their expectations.

Given the attention such a device would draw, this likely won’t be the last time we hear about the Samsung foldable smartphone before the November SDC.
