Facebook’s first Asian data centre will be in Singapore

Facebook is ramping up its Asian operations with the social media platform announcing that it plans to open a new data centre in the region – the unimaginatively named Singapore Data Centre.

The company explained its plan in a recent blog post, with the proposed 170 000 square metre building representing a 1.4 billion Singaporean dollar investment.

Furthermore Facebook notes that the Singapore Data Centre will support hundreds of jobs and increase the company’s presence in the region.

At this early stage though, Facebook has not mentioned how many jobs in particular this new data centre will provide, or indeed if the majority of its workforce will be from Singapore and Asia.

Given Facebook’s desire to increase its visibility, we’d have to assume that it will turn to locals to work there.

“We selected Singapore for a number of reasons, including robust infrastructure and access to fiber, a talented local workforce, and a great set of community partners, including the Singapore Economic Development Board and the Jurong Town Corporation, both of which have helped us move this project forward,” points out Facebook’s blog post.

Adding that, “Singapore has also established policies that foster a business-friendly environment, including measures that support the enforcement of contracts and increase the ease of construction permitting. The World Bank recently named Singapore as the number-one country in Asia to do business.”

The Singapore Data Centre is also said to run on 100 percent renewable energy, according to Facebook, and falls in line with a cleaner initiative it’s begun with newer facilities.

“When compared to other facilities in the region, it will be a leader in energy efficiency with annual Power Usage Effectiveness of 1.19. This means that almost every watt going into our data center will be used to run the computing equipment,” adds the post.

There’s no fixed timeline for when the Singapore Data Centre will be up and running, with Facebook currently reaching out to contractors in the region in order to begin the construction process.
