Google confirms New York Pixel 3 event for 9th October

One of the worst kept secrets in mobile this year has been Google’s upcoming Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. Both devices have been leaked multiple times in the lead up to the company actually unveiling the devices, with very little left to the imagination at this stage.

Nevertheless Google is forging on with its unveiling event for the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, and hopefully a few more mobile devices, with the debut set for 9th October in New York.

A slew of international media received invites for said event, with The Verge detailing some of the aspects that the invite included.

The invite includes a gif of Google’s trademark morphing lines moving around to form the phrase “I <3 NY”. The 3 is in obvious reference to which iteration of Pixel will be showcased come 9th October, and the heart emojicon may potentially point to a messaging feature Google has baked into latest devices.

It could also simply mean that Google really loves New York City.

As for what we’ve learned about the devices since leaking online in recent months, both phones will have larger displays in the same body as the Pixel 2 offerings. As such they have more of an all-screen look about them with the cursory screen notch at the top. The back cover has also been changed and won’t have the contrasting textures that previous devices have had.

With the hardware not really breaking new ground, we’re hoping the software makes up for it, and we can see more of Google’s AI applications and technology at work in the Pixel 3 and 3 XL.

There’s also the prospect of more Pixel-branded tech, such as earphones, smart speakers and notebooks.

For now, no time has been mentioned for the 9th October event, but that will likely be confirmed closer to the time.

The big question is, are people still interested in the Pixel 3 and 3 XL, given the lacklustre leaks to date?
