Shadow of the Tomb Raider to utilise Tobii Eye Tracking

You know those odd pieces of gaming tech that pop up now and again to remind you they exist? Think 3D, haptic feedback or in this case Tobii’s eye tracking which is integrated into Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

This was shown off in a trailer (embedded below) that was released yesterday, where a few features are added to the game.

“Survival instinct awareness” will highlight certain parts of the environment when glanced at, and “aim at gaze” offloads manual aiming to your eye movements. The latter system here can also be used for throwing objects when you don’t need to shoot anyone.

Finally, sweeping across the screen will also pan the game’s camera.

While the last game we can recall making a big fuss over Tobii tech was Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, there’s actually a substantial list of titles either using it right now, or will have it as a feature in the future.

Current titles aside from Shadow of the Tomb Raider include F1 2018, Far Cry 5 and Vermintide 2. You’ll also be able to use it in the upcoming battle royale mode for Dying Light – Bad Blood, and Farming Simulator 2019.

It seems that us bunching it together with other fad systems at the beginning of this article was completely unfair, especially when eye tracking is useful for accessibility.

If this is something you’re interested in, you can actually get the game for free (for PC) when purchasing the Tobii Eye Tracker 4C which is currently selling for €169 (~R3 000).

Those looking for something a bit cheaper while still Tomb Raider themed may want to consider a 3D print of Lara Croft’s compound bow.
