Samsung mentoring 19 startups in Cape Town

Samsung has been running an Employee Volunteer Programme for a number of years now, with it aimed at mentoring startups across the globe.

When it comes to the South Korean company’s plans for local startups, 19 will be joining Samsung as it aims to mentor them in terms of digitising their businesses.

The 2018 iteration of this global initiative begun in July with Samsung noting that startups in Indonesia, Malaysia, India and South Africa would be part of the programme.

“At Samsung we strive to encourage young minds and nurture the spirit of innovation. With the Global Start-up Acceleration Programme, our experts and engineers from various domains are volunteering to support the sustainable growth of local entrepreneurs in their early stages,” added Hlubi Shivanda, director: Business Innovation Group and Corporate Affairs.

Now it’s the turn of local startups, with Samsung reporting that an estimated 34 employees have descended on the Mother City this week, with the programme ending on 13th September.

It appears to be reaping benefits, as Samsung notes that 1 500 employees have joined this programme in 43 countries since 2010.

The bootcamp will focus on helping the startups develop solutions and strategies for the problems or hurdles that their business is currently facing.

After that the startups will present their businesses to venture capital firms and a panel consisting of staff members from Samsung South Africa, Samsung South Korea and SEDA (Small Enterprise Development Agency).

On the final day of the programme, deputy minister of Small Business Development, Cassel Mathale, will officiate at a prize giving ceremony.

Once this year’s Employee Volunteer Programme wraps up for 2018, five of the startups will be invited to Samsung HQ in South Korea to receive further training and assistance.
