Custom LEGO Porsche RC car goes up for auction

Every time an impressive LEGO creation from the community does the rounds, the most common question is: “can I buy it?”.

Most of the time that answer is “no”, as most builders either hang onto their finished builds or break them down to build new stuff. Some are kind enough to create and share (or even sell) instructions, but that does require tracking down the bricks yourself, which can be a bit of a daunting task if you’re not familiar with services such as BrickLink.

All of that, together with the sheer quality of this build, is what makes this 1970 Porsche 917K so special.

This recreation comes to us from “Sariel’s LEGO Workshop”, sometimes just known as “Sariel” in the community. We’ve been following their output for some time now and they’ve consistently impressed us with their vehicle builds.

The Porsche measures in at a whopping 54.4 x 25.6 x 12.8 centimetres (1:8 scale) with proportions almost exactly matching that of the original car, together with those iconic Gulf colours.

All of this was made with genuine LEGO, save for BuWizz electronics because this isn’t just a scale model, it’s an RC car too.

Aside from that some real bricks have unofficial chroming to better colour match the real thing, and there’s a few decals here too. These are, unfortunately, the reality of creating at this scale given the limited LEGO palette and, hey, even LEGO themselves use a lot of stickers in recent sets.

To make up for that there’s a slew of other features like a working suspension and opening doors.

After posting that showcase video last month, Sariel has put the Porsche up for bid on eBay with a starting price of 9 300 PLN – that’s the Polish złoty and translates to around R38K, or $2 500 to put it into a more universal measure.

On top of this you will also need to ship it to wherever you live, which eBay estimates to be around 200 PLN (~R800 / $54), not including any local import taxes and duties.

The lot has been up for a couple of days now and there’s only been one bid, exactly matching the starting price. We’re not entirely sure what the strategy around these types of lots are, but we did expect a few more bids on this despite the relatively high price.

After having tried to build much simpler products for mass consumption out of LEGO, we’re going to say that this price is actually fair for what you’re getting. That doesn’t mean it’s cheap, however, but we assume the people most interested in owning Porsches of any size aren’t too worried about that.
