[Update] Huawei Mate 20 Lite launching in South Africa on 5th October

Update: Our original story and headline stated that the Huawei Mate 20 Lite would be launching in South Africa on 31st October. We have been contacted by Huawei Mobile South Africa and told that the new smartphone will in fact launch earlier in the month, on the 5th of October.

The headline has been updated to reflect the change of date. Pricing information for the Mate 20 Lite, however, has not been confirmed.

Original story follows below.

If you’ve been keeping tabs on Huawei this year, you know the Chinese manufacturer has a new device on the way in the form of the Mate 20, but there is also the Huawei Mate 20 Lite to consider.

While the company is yet to release any official imagery or specification details on the flagship Mate 20, the site for Lite version has already up and running.

Along with listing all the vital statistics on the Mate 20 Lite, now Huawei Mobile South Africa has confirmed that it will be arriving in South Africa on 31st October.

“The Huawei Mate 20 Lite is yet another gamechanger in innovation and intelligence from Huawei. We are excited to launch it to SA consumers on 31 October, and know it will exceed all expectations,” said Likun Zhao, GM for Huawei Consumer Business Group SA, in a press release about the device.

We still don’t know what the flagship Mate 20 will be sporting, but we know pretty much everything about the Lite with the only exception being price.

To that end it will feature a quad “AI-driven” camera setup. The four cameras are split between the front and back. The primary ones are a combination 20MP and 2MP lenses, with the front-facing options touting 24MP and 2MP.

Other elements include a FullView 6.3″ display with an 81 percent screen-to-body ratio and Full HD+ 2 340 X 1 080 resolution. There’s also a fingerprint sensor on the back and 3 750mAh battery onboard.

Internally an octa-core Kirin 710 chipset is doing the heavy lifting, with the company noting that it has 60 percent greater graphics performance and 30 percent less power consumption, although compared to what device is unclear. More than likely it’s the Mate 10 Lite.

We’ll be able to experience the device in full come 16th October, where Huawei will be showcasing the Lite alongside the flagship Mate 20 in London, before landing locally later in the month.

Now all we need to find out is how much the Mate 20 Lite will cost. If Huawei can prove aggressive in this regard, it could have yet another highly-coveted Lite smartphone on its hands.

With South Africa now one of Huawei’s key first wave countries, it looks like the wait for smartphone availability in previous years is now a thing of the past.
