Clearer calls on MTN? That’s because it launched VoLTE today

MTN customers received a bit of a treat today. The telco has announced that its Voice over LTE (VoLTE) service is now live.

Okay, so what exactly is VoLTE?

Technically speaking it’s a way for operators such as MTN to make more efficient use of the spectrum that they have available to them. This allows operators to use the same network for voice and data rather than having to run two separate networks.

This doesn’t mean traditional voice calling infrastructure is going away but rather that MTN customers will now be able to experience faster call connections and better call quality when they are made from a VoLTE enabled smartphone.

MTN is marketing the technology as HD Voice.

“The rollout of the HD Voice service is part of our ongoing commitment to transform customer experience and improve the quality of their interaction with our network. With the introduction of this service, we hope that our customers will reap the benefits of the investment MTN has put in over the years to build a world-class, Bozza network that is second to none in South Africa,” MTN said in a statement.

The firm is only rolling VoLTE out to handful of smartphones at first, namely the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+, Huawei P20 Lite, Sony Xperia XZ2 and CAT S61.

“The second phase to be rolled out from October onwards, will enable more smartphone users to access HD Voice service. MTN will update the public in due course on when other smartphone brands and models can access HD Voice service,” the operator added.

To make use of VoLTE on any of the aforementioned handsets from today make sure you have the latest version of the software on your handset and VoLTE should automatically be enabled.

We quite enjoy the clarity of VoLTE calls and we’re sure MTN customers will enjoy it as much as we do.
