Clipped wings: Anthony Mackie will not be at Comic Con Africa

Just a day before the kickoff of the first ever Comic Con Africa, Anthony Mackie withdraws from the event due to Hurricane Florence.

This has been relayed to us by Comic Con Africa organisers Reed Exhibitions which says that the hurricane has made travel from the US to South Africa impossible at the moment.

The question we have to ask is this: why wasn’t Mackie already in the country by now? We assumed that the star, probably best known as playing Sam Wilson / the Falcon in the MCU, would have been here already and not flying in this late, but maybe we’re ignorant to the complexities of con management and celebrity bookings.

Regardless, this is a massive blow for Comic Con Africa with many considering Mackie to be the biggest draw in terms of celebrity appearances. We have no doubt that a fair few people bought tickets for him alone.

This problem is compounded by the fact that Jason Momoa also planned to attend the event, but withdrew months ago because of scheduling problems.

Mackie’s attendance was announced last month and many saw him as the big name replacement.

The remaining guests include Travis Fimmel (Vikings, Warcraft), Demore Barnes (American Gods, The Flash), and a bunch of other talent you can find on the official site.

Comic Con Africa starts tomorrow and we’ll be on the ground to show you how it goes, both on our main site and on Twitter.
