GPD Pocket 2 closes out crowdfunding with $1.8 million

We’ve been closely following the crowdfunding campaign of the new tiny laptop from GPD – the Pocket 2 – which ended just minutes ago over on Indiegogo.

3 153 backers pledged $1 893 500 (~R28 million) to get their own Pocket 2s, which were selling below the retail price to entice people to pay up.

The original goal was just $100K (~R150K), but that was accomplished almost immediately after the campaign went live.

If you got in very early you could pick up the 4GB RAM option for $529, or 8GB for $599.

These prices gradually rose as the early bird stock sold out, and you will be paying $769 and $839 for the 4GB and 8GB versions respectively when they get a general release.

As a quick reminder of what all those people are paying for: the Pocket 2’s biggest selling point is its laptop form factor that is sporting a 7-inch, 1 920 X 1 200 display that, as the name suggests, should fit in your pocket. If you’re in need of a full Windows experience in such a small space, GPD’s machines are some of the few that can provide it.

There’s an Intel m3-7Y30 CPU at the heart of everything and it’s all wrapped in a sleek body that obviously takes notes out of Apple’s design playbook.

You can click around the campaign page to see more about the Pocket 2, and GPD has even embedded video reviews from several tech YouTubers who got early prototypes.

We really like this as it shows a lot of faith in the product to send those early units out, and they’re promoting these videos despite them having negative points and criticisms from the content creators.
