Nvidia won’t stop selling GTX 10 series GPUs, yet

Earlier this year Nvidia showed off its all new RTX 2080 Ti and RTX 2080 GPUs.

We still have very little information about how these GPUs will perform aside from a few slides Nvidia released and that seemingly won’t change until review embargoes break.

Today however, we’re not talking about new cards, but old or rather, current cards.

Following a report by ExtremeTech this week it appears as if Nvidia will continue selling GTX 10 series cards running on the Pascal architecture, for now.

“We will be selling probably for the holiday season, both our Turing and our Pascal overall architecture,” Nvidia’s chief financial officer, Colette Kress said speaking at the Citi 2018 Global Technology Conference.

This sounds like good news for folks who are hesitant to purchase a GPU that costs R27 000.

What will be interesting to see is whether pricing for Pascal GPUs comes down at all once the RTX 20 series hits the market.

While the logic says that it will, it’s worth remembering that the RTX 20 series is being marketed at enthusiasts while the GTX 10 series now seems to be for gamers that simply want to gaming at Ultra settings without caveats – two entirely different market segments.

Because of this we don’t foresee prices dropping by much given it would effectively be cutting revenues for a segment of the market that likely outnumbers the enthusiast market.

It’s also not clear for how long GTX 10 series GPUs will be available after RTX 20 GPUs hit the market.

Nvidia really is making us ask a lot of questions that we’re simply going to have wait for the answers to. Thankfully we won’t have to wait long to find out if RTX 20 is the be all and end all of GPUs with Forbes reporting that review embargoes break on 17th September.
