North Korea denies alleged Wannacry hacker even exists

Last week the US government formally accused the North Korean government of behind both a hack of Sony Pictures and the Wannacry attack that crippled organisations last year.

The accusation follows an exhaustive affidavit from FBI special agent Nathan Shields which details how the attacks were traced back to one Park Jin Hyok – an alleged member of Lazarus Group.

The affidavit “details how the group used multiple Gmail accounts and went to some lengths to cover their tracks but left a series of electronic breadcrumbs that ultimately led to the hackers and an email account that North Korean government officials were also seen to be using,” writes The Register.

But now North Korea has said that Park Jin Hyok is a “non-entity” and that these allegations are vicious slander.

“The act of cybercrimes mentioned by the Justice Department has nothing to do with us,” researcher at the North Korean Foreign Ministry’s Institute for American Studies, Han Yong Song said according to AP.

“The U.S. should seriously ponder over the negative consequences of circulating falsehoods and inciting antagonism against the DPRK [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea] that may affect the implementation of the joint statement adopted at the DPRK-U.S. summit,” the researcher added.

The US has charged Hyok with two counts of conspiracy to commit computer and wire fraud.
