South Africa’s Constitutional Court has today said that marijuana is legal for personal, private use by adults. Meanwhile, the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) in the US has discovered that US teens are vaping the drug.
Truth be told vaporisers (we’ll refer to them as vapes) for the consumption of marijuana are nothing new but the fact that teens are using easily available vapes for that purpose may be cause for concern.
Following the results of the 2016 National Youth Tobacco Survey of 20 000 middle and high school students published this week, the CDC found that 5 200 students had tried ecigarettes and 11 percent of students surveyed had tried smoking marijuana with a vape.
Extrapolating those numbers, The Verge estimates that some 2 million US teens may be using vapes to smoke marijuana.
The trouble is that this survey is limited in its scope. For one, respondents self-reported their vape and marijuana use which has the potential to skew numbers slightly.
The study doesn’t go into whether teens were using bespoke vapes for marijuana consumption or the vapes that allow for the use of marijuana oil.
The fact of the matter however is that the CDC is now onto teens using vapes for marijuana consumption. How exactly the US will tackle this situation is something we’re curious to see especially when there are so many states where the drug is legal for adults to use.
