African clothing manufacturers need to become more agile

When we talk about digitalisation, digital transformation and other hot topics in the tech world we often overlook certain sectors.

One of those sectors is clothing manufacturers.

We’re not saying the sector can’t be disrupted or that innovation can’t flourish it’s just tricky to imagine how the sector does these things when you’re not immersed in it.

A company that is thinking about how clothing can be disrupted is ThreadSol.

This company creates intelligent solutions for apparel manufacturers and it says that African players in the sector must become more agile and embrace technology or risk being run out of the market.

Among ThreadSol’s solutions are intelloCut and intelloBuy which help to reduce planning time by as much as 80 percent and lessen sourcing costs by utilising insights garnered from data.

These solutions are powered by technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data.

ThreadSol’s key account manager Suhrud Panigrahi explains that there are three key trends in the global manufacturing sector as regards sourcing.

“The current global sourcing trends are based on 3 major things: trend injection – the reactive approach of the brand to competition’s product range, read & react- small SKUs to test market response, and in-season chase – revise manufacturing POs to focus on fast selling goods,” Panigrahi explains.

The manager adds that manufacturers need to become super vendors.

“A super vendor is a manufacturer who can work upon these trends by not only controlling costs of manufacturing, but also innovate the products to take pressure off the brands. Another compelling characteristic of a super vendor is to postpone or disrupt the order bookings for reactive trend injections,” says Panigrahi.

Clothing brands are demanding more and more from manufacturers. This demand has led to players in the sector in countries such as Bangladesh failing to keep up with trends. That same can happen in Africa if manufacturers don’t start embracing technology says ThreadSol.

ThreadSol will be attending the ATF Trade Expo in Cape Town in November and it might be worthwhile for those in the clothes manufacturing space to head that way and get some advice on becoming more agile and disrupting the sector.
