League of Legends has its first global sponsor – Mastercard

Big enterprises sponsoring esports is becoming less of an oddity and today yet another mainstream brand is getting into esports in the form of Mastercard.

The firm has announced a multi-year partnership with Riot Games which will see Mastercard become the first global sponsor for League of Legends.

“Esports is a phenomenon that continues to grow in popularity, with fans that can rival those at any major sporting event in their enthusiasm and energy,” says chief marketing and communications officer at Mastercard, Raja Rajamannar.

The company will be focused on three League of Legends events – the Mid-Season Invitational, the All-Star Event and the World Championship. Each of these events will boast exclusive experiences from Mastercard through its Priceless platform.

These experiences will be available at this year’s World Championship and will include:

These experiences are rather expensive with the play testing alone carrying a price tag of $750 (~R11 039) though that does include a ticket to the World Championship which eases the sting a bit.

This partnership will also see Mastercard bringing League of Legends co-branded products to select markets in 2019. We’re not entirely sure what this means but if we had to guess we hope we’ll see some League of Legends credit and debit cards coming soon.
