The Oculus Quest is a VR headset that doesn’t need a PC or a smartphone

Virtual Reality gaming is about to get a lot cheaper and easier.

Creators of VR headsets Oculus have revealed an all new headset called the Oculus Quest which doesn’t have wires, doesn’t require a PC and uses no sensors.

In lieu of there being no sensors Oculus uses something its calling Insight.

“This innovative system uses four ultra wide-angle sensors and computer vision algorithms to track your exact position in real time without any external sensors. Insight gives you a greater sense of immersion, presence, and mobility, plus the ability to go beyond room-scale,” wrote the firm in a blog post.

The Quest will also use Oculus Guardian to keep you safe while playing.

As for the headset itself it sports a display resolution of 1 600 x 1 440 per eye and the lenses can be adjusted for comfort. Oculus also adds that it has apparently improved its built-in audio.

When it comes to tracking the Quest has an immense range. A report by The Verge reveals that you could run around a space 4 000 square feet (371.61 square metres) big and have no issues.

The headset will ship with two Touch controllers which now have a loop that goes above your hand rather than in front of it. It looks much more natural than the original Oculus controllers if we’re honest.

As for games Oculus says there will be 50 titles available at launch including Robo Recall, The Climb and a new Star Wars games, Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series.

The Quest hits shelves in Spring 209 (that’s Autumn for us here at the bottom of Africa) and the headset will start at $399 (~R5 666.65) for a 64GB iteration. There’s no word yet on a local release date but our eyes are trained to the news wires for that information.
