Huawei reveals performance info for Mate 20 ahead of launch

On the lookout for a new flagship phone? You be interested in the forthcoming Huawei Mate 20, which the Chinese company will be officially unveiling in London on 16th October.

For the most part little is known about the smartphone but now Huawei has revealed some more details with a focus on what the Kirin 980 chipset powering the Mate 20 will enable the device to do.

Along with being the world’s first 7 nanometer chipset (despite what Apple tells you) the Kirin 980 is also said to the most powerful piece of silicon that its Huawei-owned developers have mustered to date.

To that end Huawei is claiming an estimated 75 percent improvement in performance, along with 58 percent greater power efficiency compared to its predecessor, which featured in the Huawei Mate 10 Pro.

The gaming experience is also said to have received a significant upgrade, with a Mali-G76 GPU yielding 46 percent greater graphics performance and 178 percent improved power efficiency compared to last year’s iteration.

Added to this is peak downloads speeds of up 1.4Gbps thanks to a world first LTE Cat.21 class modem inside the Mate 20. It’s essentially 4.5G functionality with Huawei noting that the device is also 5G-ready, which means an OTA update could also enhance the connectivity of the device.

On the AI side, image processing has also been upped, with 4 500 images capable of being processed per minute. We’re hoping though that Huawei has a bit more than image recognition on the cards for the Mobile AI functions of the Mate 20.

We’ll find that out on 16th October when the smartphone is revealed in full. Following that the Huawei Mate 20 will launch in the MEA (Middle East and Africa) region on 24th October, but no confirmation at this stage whether that will include South Africa.

Seeing that the P20 and P20 Pro landed so quickly in SA following the global reveal in Paris, we’re holding thumbs that the Mate 20 will have a similarly short launch window locally.
