Microsoft ending support for classic Skype on 1st November

If you’re running version 7 of Skype, or classic Skype as it is fondly referred to, it’s time to upgrade.

Not because that version of the application is necessarily inferior, but as the result of a recent announcement that Microsoft will no longer be supporting that variant on desktop.

The news was shared in a recent Skype blog post, with support coming to an end on 1st November. For mobile, you’ll have a fortnight more to still enjoy classic Skype, with support ending on 15th November.

“As we continue to focus on and improve Skype version 8, support for Skype versions 7, and below will end on November 1, 2018 on desktop devices and November 15, 2018 on mobile and tablet devices. Although you may be able to use older versions for a little while, we encourage you to update today to avoid any interruption,” explained an editor’s note on the blog post.

Microsoft had initially postponed the 1st November deadline in August, but has since put it back on the cards. At the time there was some slight push back from users, who find some key features were missing from the substantially overhauled version 8 of Skype.

With the 1st November date set once again for classic Skype, hopefully some of the missing features will find their way into version 8 in the interim.

Nevertheless Skype is prompting users to make the upgrade here.
