5G devices will be “immediately recognisable” says US operator Sprint

There’s been a lot of buzz surrounding 5G as a technology but we’re still waiting for news regarding the handsets that will be able to make use of this broadband standard.

Truth be told we weren’t expecting them to be much different from the smartphones we see on the market right now but an interview with Mishka Dehghan, vice president of 5G development at Sprint in the US has made us rethink our assumptions.

“For Sprint we have partnered up with LG Electronics and they are going to give us a beautiful shiny object – the first 5G device that will launch at the same time as our first market,” Dehgan said speaking to Mobile World Live.

The first mobile 5G network from Sprint will go live in the US during first half of 2019 Dehgan added.

So a beautiful shiny object sounds promising but then Dehgan said this.

“What’s really remarkable about the 5G device that you will see is that it’s going to be immediately recognisable. So if you’re walking down the street, holding this device, everybody will know you are using a 5G device.”

Naturally this makes us incredibly curious about what this 5G handset could look like.

It’s no secret that handsets look very similar even when comparing different brands to each other so perhaps an “immediately recognisable” handset might help to break up the monotony of the current smartphone market.

Of course it could be ghastly. The Nokia N-Gage was immediately recognisable, but it was also hideous.

Naturally while Sprint and LG’s partnership might yield a unique looking smartphone that doesn’t mean all 5G capable smartphones will borrow the look.

With 2018 winding down we won’t have to wait too long before we get to feast our eyes on the next generation of mobile phones.
