Microsoft has had to hit pause on its rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 update.
The update to Windows 10 version 1809 was seemingly going rather smoothly until last week some users reported that files were missing.
Actually, scratch that, missing implies they can be found. Users are reporting that their files located in the Documents folder are gone. Some users have restored their system to a previous version of Windows only to find that the files are still gone.
The affected platforms are:
- Windows 10, version 1809
- Windows Server, version 1809
- Windows 10 IoT Core, version 1809
- Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019
- Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2019
- Windows Server 2019
As a result, the rollout of the October update has been paused but what if you diligently check for, and install updates?
Microsoft has advised that users who have already updated and believe they have an issue after installing the update should minimise use of the device and contact Microsoft support directly.

The minimising use of a device might point to possible recovery but Microsoft doesn’t appear to be making promises in that regard so don’t hold your breath.
What is most bizarre about this situation is that Forbes reports Windows Insiders told Microsoft about this months ago. If this is true what then is the point of the Windows Insider programme which allows select users to test updates to Windows before it is rolled out en masse.
For those that have not yet updated to Windows 10 version 1809 there is no need for you to take any action.
Microsoft has said it will alert customers when it starts the update rollout once again.
