The Vespa Elettrica electric scooter costs more than an entry-level car

Everything is getting electrified these days, with all of the top carmakers in the world debuting new EVs of late. The transport industry in general appears to be getting in on the action, with the Vespa Elettrica being one of the latest offerings to hit the market.

This all-electric scooter was announced by Vespa roughly two years ago, but is now ready to hit the roads.

The one problem we’re running into, along with it not being available in SA at the moment, is the price. Namely that it starts at €6 390, which given the current exchange rate would calculate to R109 415.

It’s still unclear how much the Vespa Elettrica would cost in South Africa, or even if it will land locally, but given that price it would definitely be in the luxury category.

So what does R110k, or more than the starting price of a Chery QQ3 car, buy you?

Well the 4kW battery on the Vespa Elettrica can muster 99 kilometres before a recharge is needed, with the battery pack is said to last 10 years. In terms of power it will yield the same kind of output as a 50cc scooter.

With one of the upshots of an electric car being that it is often faster than its petrol brethren, unfortunately the same does not apply for the Vespa Elettrica.

Other features include a 4.4″ TFT display mounted near the speedometer, and some “electric” blue accents on the body of the scooter, but that’s about it.

Yes, going electric makes more sense in the long run, but given the premium you often have to pay up front compared to fuel-powered vehicles, the prices of electrified vehicles needs to start coming down.

As such, we’d be very interested to see if anyone would ever be willing to pay R100k for an electric scooter here in SA.
