Huawei Mate 20 Pro: What we know so far

Tomorrow (16th October) will see Huawei unveil its latest flagship phone in London.

With the Huawei Mate 20 Pro a hotly anticipated device for multiple reasons, naturally some information has been drip fed to us by the Chinese company in the lead up, as well as the usual leaks that surface ahead of a big phone launch.

Here’s what we know so far about the Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

Name

This one is pretty easy, with the phone maker keeping its recent naming convention in place. To that end their new flagship device will be called the Mate 20 Pro, serving as the successor to last year’s Mate 10 Pro.

As for other phones that Huawei will have in store tomorrow, murmurings suggest a limited edition Porsche Design model is in the works, as the company has done for the past two years.

There’s also a chance that a gaming-specific device is in the works, especially with Huawei focusing on mobile gaming performance with its GPU Turbo update.

Processor

Much like the name of the phone, the processor powering this model has already been announced as the Kirin 980 chipset.

The notable features of this CPU is its 7 nanometer design, which should go head-to-head with the Apple A12 Bionic chipset, which boasts a similarly sized architecture.

As such it should be interesting to see which of the two yields the better benchmarking scores, as well as on-phone performance.

With past Kirin chipsets proving powerful on paper, and solid in-hand, they’ve never quite been able to best the Apple, Exynos and Qualcomm offerings.

Design

Here we need to point to a few leaks, with WinFuture.de releasing a set of leaked images for the Mate 20 Pro that look legitimate.

If genuine, it would see the only notable change being the layout of the rear camera, but more about that later.

As for other charges, the Porsche-inspired stripe from the Mate 10 Pro is absent, and a wide-screen notch is present up front. If we had to read into that, it would likely mean that Huawei has something special planned for the front-facing camera.

There’s also no noticeable fingerprint sensor, which could mean that Huawei has gone for an under-the-display option instead.

Cameras

As for the cameras, once again we must turn to leaked images to get a better idea of what Huawei has planned.

Much like the P20 Pro, the Mate 20 Pro appears to be favouring a triple camera setup on the rear. They’re positioned a bit more differently in the Mate phone than the P20 one, with the three lenses and flash orientated in a square.

We’re on the fence as far as the look goes, but must admit that it looks neat. Hopefully though Huawei has something unique planned as far the capabilities of the lenses goes.

Tune in

For now that’s all we know, but we’re sure there will be a leak or two ahead of the event tomorrow.

Either way, all eyes will be on London to see what Huawei officially unveils.

If you’re keen to watch the live stream, you can view it on Huawei Mobile’s YouTube channel at 15:00 (SA time).
