Huawei Mate 20 Pro unveiled in London

There’s a new flagship phone hitting the market in the form of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

The Chinese phone maker held an event in London today to reveal the device in full, with it serving as their flagship offering for the second half of 2018, and aimed at those who did not opt for the Huawei P20 Pro.

The wait could prove to be a good idea, with the Huawei Mate 20 Pro featuring a few noteworthy features and specifications.

Kicking things off is the 6.2inch screen that has minimal bezels and 3 120 X 1 440 resolution. Added to this is a wide-screen notch at the top, along with a fingerprint sensor embedded beneath the display.

As for the screen notch it houses a 24MP front-facing camera that will obviously be used to take selfies, but can also be used for facial recognition to unlock the Mate 20 Pro.

Flipping the device over, one of the big talking points is how Huawei has orientated the camera setup, with a square housing for three lenses and a flash. Certified by Leica as with previous flagship Huawei phones, this iteration is slightly different, with wide-angle photography being the focus.

To that end there’s a 40MP wide-angle, 20MP ultra wide-angle and 8MP telephoto lens on offer. As such is should be interesting to see how it compares to the triple lens setup found on the P20 Pro.

Looking internally the highly-touted octa-core Kirin 980 chipset is doing the heavy lifting, with 6GB RAM and 128GB onboard storage available. According to Huawei, the Kirin 980 is outperforming its rivals, thanks to its 7 nanometer architecture.

More specifically Huawei says the Kirin 980 performs 5-10 percent better than Apple’s 7 nanometer A12 Bionic CPU, but we still need to benchmark them ourselves to confirm their claims.

As for other notable features, a large 4 200mAh battery which features supercharging capabilities that offer 70 percent battery capacity in 30 minutes and reaches 100 percent in 70 minutes. There’s also a very interesting reverse charging function that allows users to charge other devices that support wireless charging with their Mate 20 Pro.

So when will the Huawei Mate 20 Pro be available in South Africa?

Well Huawei Mobile SA tells us that their new flagship phone will be ready for pre-order on 24th October. The company is also having a local launch event on the 23rd, where pricing on pre-order offers will be detailed by Huawei.
