Huawei Watch GT debuts as a style-focused smartwatch

Huawei held its Mate 20 Pro unveiling in London today, but along with the flagship phone it debuted a new smartwatch in the form of the Huawei Watch GT.

The device was leaked a couple of weeks ago, but Huawei did not confirm that such an offering would be revealed.

Now that it’s here, what is this new smartwatch sporting?

Well Huawei tells us this offering is not as fitness-focused as previous wearables from the Chinese company, and as such does not serve as a follow-up to the Watch 2 that was debuted at MWC a couple of years ago.

Instead the Huawei Watch GT is more of a fashion-focused smartwatch, with the stylings leaning more towards the chronograph side. While it wants to be a stylish offering, the Watch GT’s size and frame will likely appeal to male consumers rather than female ones.

As for the technology the Watch GT utilises, a touch-enabled 1.39″ circular OLED display is present (454 X 454). Navigation is handled by a variety of different swipes on the screen, as with most smartwatches out there, along with two buttons on the right hand side of the watch face.

Huawei is running a proprietary operating system on the Watch GT, and does not make use of Google’s Wear OS that many forthcoming smartwatches will cater to. As such we could see the manufacturer go the Samsung route with its Tizen OS and use its own operating system for more wearables and smart devices.

Other features on the Watch GT include 14 days worth of battery life while in standby and an estimated seven days depending on use, with it dropping to around 24 hours should the GPS functionality be constantly on.

Added to this is 5M water-resistance, a stainless steel watch bezel and built-in hear rate sensing.

For now no local pricing and availability information is available, but Huawei will reveal more at a planned Mate 20 Pro launch event on 23rd October.
