Specs Shootout: Huawei Mate 20 Pro vs. Huawei P20 Pro

Over the past few years, Huawei’s mobile strategy has been to unveil two flagship phones each year. 2018 is no different, with the Huawei P20 Pro debuted earlier in the year, and now the Huawei Mate 20 Pro being unveiled today.

The question now is how the two compare from a specifications perspective.

To save you some time researching, we’ve taken a look at the key specs for each device below – display, processor, camera, battery.

Display

First up is the display. The P20 Pro is the slightly smaller of the two phones with a 6.1inch screen compared to the Mate 20 Pro’s 6.3inch offering.

The latter is larger as it features ultra-thin bezels. Both have screen notches, but the Mate 20 Pro’s one is wider as it features a bigger lens and a few more sensors.

In terms of resolution, the Mate 20 Pro also has the edge with 3 120 X 1 440 being more than the 2 240 X 1 440 available on the P20 Pro.

As such, we need to give the Mate 20 Pro the edge in this category.

Processor

Next we look internally at the CPUs each device has. Both opt for a Kirin processor, but it’s the Mate 20 Pro one that grabs more headlines.

The Kirin 980 chipset utilised is the first 7 nanometer offering by the company. It’s also significantly better than the Kirin 970 found in the P20 Pro, with Huawei noting that it yields 20 greater SoC performance and 40 percent improved power efficiency.

Once again, it’s the Huawei Mate 20 Pro that comes up trumps when it comes to processors.

Camera

Now one of the most important elements of any smartphone, let’s give the cameras a gander.

Each phone features a Leica-certified triple lens option, but the focus of each trio is slightly different.

On the P20 Pro the big improvement was the 40MP lens that was added to the mix, which serves up supremely detailed and nuanced pictures. The Mate 20 Pro also has a 40MP lens, but it rather focuses on wide-angle photography.

As such deciding which is better comes down to personal preference, with each trio equally well-appointed when it comes to the size of the lenses.

Battery

The last category we’re looking at is battery. Both the P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro feature large non-removable lithium-ion options at 4 000mAh and 4 200mAh respectively.

With the Huawei Mate 20 Pro featuring the slightly larger one, it’s the better choice by a small margin.

Early verdict

The P20 Pro is one of the better flagship phones we’ve encountered this year, which makes beating it quite the feat. In terms of specs at least, the Mate 20 Pro appears to do, with it featuring the better display, more powerful processor and larger battery. With camera capabilities one of the more subjective categories, we cannot say it is better.

When it comes to some of the more objective specifications though, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is the superior device.
