The most intriguing new features on the Huawei Mate 20 Pro

Huawei unveiled their new flagship phone this week, and while we’ve already looked extensively at the specifications of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, the device also has a number of new features compared to its predecessor.

Here, we’re going to look at the most intriguing, some of which will help distinguish the Mate 20 Pro from other flagship phones currently on the market.

Going wide

One of the elements of the Mate 20 Pro getting a lot of attention is the square housing of its primary camera system, with it featuring three lenses and a flash.

It isn’t the first time that Huawei has put three lenses on the back of a phone, this trio is more focused on wide-angle photography.

As such it offer users a larger field of view when taking pictures. This larger scope should come in handy when photographing outdoor surroundings and buildings.

There’s also the Leica certification that this trio of lenses features, which again means that it should produce high quality images.

Advanced detection

Sticking with Mate 20 Pro’s camera setup, all three lenses have been imbued with Huawei’s AI functionality. This is particularly focused on object detection, which we’ve seen in previous Huawei flagship phones.

One feature that is new and rather intriguing is the ability to gain insight on detected objects with a system called HiVision.

One interesting way that it’s being used is giving the caloric information for a piece of food.

In theory, if a Mate 20 Pro user wants to see just how many calories are in a burger for example, this phone is capable of doing so.

Reverse charging

This is something that we have not seen in a flagship phone to date.

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is capable of charging other devices. More specifically those tat also cater to wireless fast charging.

Huawei adds that the feature is not brand dependent, which would offer Mate 20 Pro owners the chance to show off to those who own an Apple or Samsung flagship.

Keeping it simple

In terms of the user interface the Mate 20 Pro is sporting EMUI 9.0.

This UI has been improved somewhat from the previous iteration.

To that end Huawei has “cleaned up” the user interface, to make it look simpler and more streamlined. As such things don’t look as cluttered compared to EMUI 8.0, and navigation is said to be easier too.

As such the Mate 20 Pro should look and feel more on par with the UI’s from the likes of Samsung.

Under the screen

Search the body of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and you won’t find a regular fingerprint sensor.

Instead of placing one on the rear of the phone, or below the display, Huawei has opted to put it underneath the screen of this smartphone.

It’s a first for the company and gives the Mate 20 Pro a differentiating feature compared to most of the new flagship phones out there at the moment.

Along with an under-the-screen fingerprint sensor, Huawei’s Mate 20 Pro also has facial recognition, with both functions serving as biometric security for the device.

Feature rich

When it comes to specifications the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is on par with all of the new flagship phones released in 2018.

With the market more competitive than ever, having features like reverse charging and under-the-screen fingerprint sensing should help distinguish this phone from others.
