Local universities are flooded with students from all over South Africa (and internationally), and for those not studying in the cities they usually live in, the options can be scarce.
That’s why we will be looking at student accommodation off-campus. It is important to get accommodation that is not just comfortable, but also close to campus, has access to learning materials or study areas and is safe.
We will list some of the best places that offer affordable student accommodation that is closer to your university of choice, as well as mention the added extras they offer.
University of Johannesburg (UJ) and Wits University
Dudley Heights is located in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. It is accredited by the University of Witwatersrand as well as University of Johannesburg, and near all the major public transport services, with shops also nearby.
It offers fully furnished units with single and sharing units. For three people sharing a room it would cost about R3 350 and R3 550 for two people who are sharing per month.
This accommodation is located in the heart of Braamfontein, Johannesburg. It has fully furnished units as well as laundry services with 24 hour security. Skyways is accredited by WITS as well as UJ. Prices range from R3 350 to R3 550 per month.
Each unit is furnished, has a fridge and small kitchen, is equipped with a telephone, internet connection and wall mounted heater. Accredited by WITS, some of the buildings have male-only and female-only residence.
Tshwane University of Technology and Pretoria University
This building is located at Philip Nel Park, Pretoria West. TUT Varsity Lodge is still a private accommodation for students. It has 24 hour security and it is walking distance from TUT, along with shuttle services for students. For you to stay in this building you would have to pay from around R2 650 per month or R29 150 per year.
Lynwood Varsity Lodge is found in Brooklyn, Pretoria. Located 250 metres from the University of Pretoria, it is a privately owned student accommodation, consisting of 24 hour security and secure basement parking. Depending on the room you choose you can pay from R7 095 per month.
Durban University of Technology and University of KwaZulu Natal
This building is in Greyville, Durban. Trifecta is privately owned, with rent starting from R3 005 for a single room to R2 173 for four people sharing a unit. They have 24 hour security, laundry services and a shared garden. Their units are fully furnished and it is walking distance from DUT.
Situated near South Point Beach Prices ranging from R3 000 to R4 200 per month depending on which room you choose. The buildings consist of free WiFi of 20G per month, laundry facility, communal kitchen and bathroom. This is a private accommodation.
University of Cape Town and Cape Peninsula University of Technology
A-MSquared is at Rondebosch and Mowbray, found 500 metres from the UCT upper campus, and accredited by the institution. If you’re looking to stay at this building you can pay from around R5 000 for two people sharing per month.
It is near transport routes and the Jammie shuttle service, as well as being fully furnished with 24 hour security as well as a laundry.
This student accommodation has five buildings situated in Cape Town CBD, the units are fully furnished with big communal areas, laundry services as well as 24 hour security. Accredited by the UCT, you can pay R3 500 for two people sharing room to R6 100 for a bachelor room.
University of the Free State
These units are directly adjacent to the medical faculty of the University of the Free State, and accredited by UFS. They are fully furnished and have 24 hour parking. For two bedroom units you can pay around R3 900 to R 4 200 depending on which block you choose.
