LEGO’s newest Ideas set is a double fairy tale pop-up book

LEGO Ideas – the platform where fan creations can be turned into official retail sets – has unveiled its latest offering in 21315: Pop-Up Book.

This 859 piece set is a pop-up book that can be built to feature either the story of Red Riding Hood or Jack and the Beanstalk.

While the folding house for the Red Riding Hood story is pretty good, the beanstalk for the second story is particularly impressive, using LEGO’s Technic line of moving lever arms to make something surprisingly large.

You can see the official video for the new set below. For those that don’t keep up with LEGO, the size difference between Jack and the giant is achieved using what’s known as a microfigure.

Microfigures, as you may have guessed, are smaller than minifigures. They feature no articulation and are small enough to fit onto the hands of a minifigure.

LEGO routinely uses these to add characters into sets where the scaling wouldn’t work with a minifigure. The SHIELD Helicarrier and Hogwarts Castle sets make particular use of these pieces.

For those overseas this set will cost $69.99 /  €69.99 / £69.99 and will release everywhere on 1st November.

Thanks to the official LEGO store in Sandton, we’re hoping that South Africa is included in “everywhere”. As for local price, we don’t have one yet, but we’re going to guess around R1 500. The current direction conversion from USD puts the price closer to R1 000, but import taxes and such usually add on a bit more, and the weak state of the rand overall means that direct conversions don’t always happen.

The original fan creators of this set are Grant Davis and Jason Allemann. You may know Allemann by his YouTube name JKBrickworks where he creates all manner of inventive creations. This is his second time having his name attached to a LEGO Ideas final product, the first being 21305: Maze.

You can see the original prototype for this idea on his channel.

If you want to see more of 21315: Pop-Up Book, make sure you read the official blog post announcing it, or even a review from one of the sites that got early access to it.
