Security should be a key consideration when incorporating mobile solutions

Smartphones and tablets are increasingly being used by employees to access sensitive company information as part of their jobs.

A recent survey of 400 IT decision makers at local enterprises conducted by World Wide Worx in partnership with SYSPRO, found that 31.5 percent of respondents already used advanced mobile software.

“Important though, is for businesses to be extremely vigilant in ensuring the right security infrastructure is in place before rolling out mobile software. ERP systems in particular hold vast amounts of incredibly sensitive information,” says SYSPRO Africa Product Manager, Deidre Fryer.

Part of that vigilance comes from employees themselves.

The SYSPRO manager says that educating employees about the dangers of cyberattacks and making them aware of the various dangers a business faces is a key consideration.

“And key to user education is driving the message home that employees need to be extremely wary of clicking on links that come from an untrustworthy source. In some cases, this requires greater vigilance than in others as many hackers will try and imitate links and e-mail address that do originate from trusted sources,” says Fryer.

For instance, employees should be taught to look for slight variations in URLs and email addresses. This is because cybercriminals often try to mimic these in hopes that unsuspecting users click them.

Strong passwords are – as ever – incredibly important and employees should be told to create secure passwords.

“Making sure your employees are aware of these simple cybersecurity measures could end up saving your business hundreds of thousands in damages,” concludes Fryer.
