Rockstar launches mobile companion app for Red Dead Redemption 2

It’s launch day for Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2), and while some of us grapple with the 90GB-plus download file for the game, developer Rockstar has another piece of content ready for today.

This takes the form of a mobile companion app for the game, which serves as a platform for real-time updates in your RDR2 experience. This isn’t the first time that Rockstar has played around with a mobile companion app, having done so for GTA V.

This version is available to iOS and Android users, and features an in-game version of the map to interact with. It therefore allows gamers to pan and zoom on the map, set waypoints and areas of interest on the map, with Rockstar noting that it’s a different method of exploration for Red Dead Redemption 2.

The app will also feature information about the main protagonist Arthur Morgan, along with his in-game stats. One of other nifty aspects to the app is the ability to remove the in-game HUD, which coupled with the ability to go into first-person mode could provide a more immersive experience.

One thing we should point out though, is that Rockstar’s blog about the app features screenshots of a tablet, which likely means it is best suited to a device with a more generous amount of screen real estate than that of a smartphone.
